Mowing | The First Cut – The Soundtrack of Spring

Every spring, it begins quietly. One mower in the distance. Then another. Soon, the gentle hum evolves into a neighbourhood symphony, the unmistakable sound that winter is finally loosening its grip.

That first cut of the year brings more than just noise. It carries the scent of freshly cut grass, the promise of longer evenings, and the feeling that the garden is waking up once more.

With the astronomical spring (vernal equinox) just days away on 20th March, many homeowners are beginning to look at their lawns and ask the same question. Is it time?

How to Know Your Lawn Is Ready

Spring doesn’t come on a set date for your grass. It arrives when the conditions are right.

Here’s what to check before making that first pass with the mower.

1. The Grass Is Actively Growing

If your lawn looks like it needs a cut, that’s usually your first sign. The grass should be growing, not just standing up after being flattened by winter. As a rule of thumb, mow when it’s about 5 to 8 cm tall and stands upright instead of looking matted.

If growth still feels sluggish, give it a little more time.

2. The Ground Is Firm Underfoot

This is crucial. If the soil still feels soft, saturated, or spongy, mowing can cause compaction and leave wheel ruts. Walk across the lawn first. If your footprints sink in or leave marks, it is too soon.

A lawn needs to breathe. Early compaction can undo much of the recovery work happening beneath the surface.

3. There Is No Frost Forecast

Late frosts are still possible in March. Cutting grass just before a frost can stress the plant and leave it vulnerable.

Check the forecast and aim for a mild, dry spell.

4. You Raise the Mower Height

The first cut should always be gentle. Set your mower higher than usual and only remove the very top of the grass blade. Never cut more than one third of the height.

Think of it as a tidy-up, not a full haircut.

Why the First Cut Matters

That first mow does more than make the lawn look neat. It encourages lateral growth, helping the grass thicken as temperatures rise. It also improves airflow across the surface and sets a rhythm for the growing season.

Combined with aeration and early feeding, the first cut signals that spring lawn care has officially begun.

The Smell That Signals a New Season

There is something about that first cut. The sound of the mower. The smell of fresh grass. It feels hopeful. It feels like the garden is moving again.

But patience is still part of the process. Wait until the lawn shows you it is ready. Let it wake up properly.
